We are hosting two essay contests; one for high school students and one for middle school students.

 

Middle School Contest

“What Does Memorial Day Mean to Me?”

Open to All 7th and 8th Grade Students at

Niagara Falls High School and Niagara Catholic

 

  • You’re invited to write a 250-word essay that describes why Memorial Day is important to you.
  • Please include your name, grade, and school name at the top of the essay.
  • The essays will be judged by a panel from the Niagara Gazette.*
  • The judging criteria includes: originality, personalization, and understanding of the theme (and of course, correct grammar and spelling).
  • The author of the winning essay will win a pizza party for his or her Social Studies class!
  • The winning essay will be read at the NF Veterans Memorial on the day of the Community Memorial Day Parade.
  • Representatives from the parade committee will notify the winning student’s school after the judging is complete.

  • Deadline for Submissions is May 1. NO ENTRIES WILL BE ACCEPTED AFTER THIS DATE.

High School Contest

“What Is the Real Cost of Freedom?”

Open to All 9th and 12th Grade Students at

Niagara Falls High School and Niagara Catholic

 

  • You’re invited to write a 250-word essay that describes why Memorial Day is important to you.
  • Please include your name, grade, and school name at the top of the essay.
  • The essays will be judged by a panel from the Niagara Gazette.*
  • The judging criteria includes: originality, personalization, and understanding of the theme (and of course, correct grammar and spelling).
  • There will be three prize categories: First, Second, and Third.
  • The First Place winner will receive a $75 cash prize
  • The Second Place winner will receive a $50 cash prize
  • The Third Place winner will receive a $25 cash prize
  • The winning essays will be read at the NF Veterans Memorial on the day of the Community Memorial Day Parade.
  • Representatives from the parade committee will notify the winning students’ schools after the judging is complete.
